The Gita Govinda contains 24 songs or prabandhs, which have been combined for the first time by Natyasutra online. As each song contains eight sets of couplets, it is also called Ashtapadi (eight padh). This unique literary innovation adds to the overall charm of the Gita Govinda, and it was replicated by poets for the next 800 years.
Cantos one and seven contain four prabandhs each; canto eleven contains three prabandhs; cantos two, four, five and twelve, two prabandhs each; and cantos three, six, eight, nine and ten contain one prabandh. Thus, there are twenty-four prabandhs. These were set to music in different melodious ragas, which were appreciated and followed by poets in the later periods. More than a hundred commentaries have been written in Sanskrit and over fifty in regional languages in India also in many foreign languages on the Gita Govinda.
